Accessible in two hours (traffic willing) from my base in Los Angeles, Palm Springs is my favorite drivable destination for its stunning desert landscape, which feels like a true escape.

I've traveled there several times a year for the last two decades in my role as an event reporter and travel writer, as well as for trips with family and friends. It was my first choice for a safe vacation during COVID.

Palm Springs is also one of Airbnb's most popular destinations in 2021, likely because the private homes for rent are diverse and impressive. The signature style is midcentury modern, with many designed by famous architects of the period. Some offer unique, exquisite dome structures, and almost all come with pool access for relief from the heat.

Having visited Palm Springs numerous times, including in an Airbnb during the pandemic, I've become intimately familiar with the top homes in the area, which I've curated below.

The best Airbnb rentals in Palm Springs were chosen based on the following criteria:

  1. All listings are for private homes in keeping with current expert recommendations for social distancing.
  2. Every listing is highly rated. Every home either has a rating of 4.88 out of a possible 5 or higher, or are included in Airbnb's elevated Plus or Luxe categories.
  3. Every host is committed to Airbnb's Enhanced Clean program, a five-step cleaning process developed in partnership with health and hospitality experts.
  4. All have standout signature Palm Springs style, including exceptional design and amenities such as spa-like bathrooms or chef's kitchens.
  5. Every Palm Springs Airbnb has a private pool along with indoor-outdoor living space.
  6. Listings accommodate a range of price points to suit different budgets, with choices ranging from a budget-friendly family stay for $168 to a splurge-worthy Airbnb Luxe Villa for $789.

Here are the best Palm Springs Airbnbs with pools, sorted by price from low to high.

FAQ

What is there to do in Palm Springs?

People's reasons for visiting Palm Springs vary. Many are in it for pure relaxation, pool time, and indoor-outdoor dining. Others are design enthusiasts who come to savor all the midcentury architecture and entertaining on display.

Other active travelers will find plenty to do when weather permits: hiking, tennis, biking, golf, and more. Palm Springs is also rich with options for dining, shopping, and museums.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, with its knockout white-knuckle views, takes riders up to the wilderness of the Mt. San Jacinto State Park and it's not to be missed.

Major events and festivals around sports, music, arts, and architecture also draw travelers year-round.

When is the best time to visit Palm Springs?

Palm Springs and the surrounding environs are famously hot in the summer — it's a desert after all. Summer temps easily soar well over 100 degrees. And while some might find this much too hot for comfort, others find it just perfect for enjoying a leisurely life of pool time, chaise loungers, and cold cocktails.

Spring and fall are much milder, but when live events return, spring months become quite busy (read: expensive) as crowds swell for festivals like Coachella and Stagecoach.

Winter weather can be cold (depending on your definition), but this can also be a festive time to visit, with snow on the surrounding peaks and events like the Palm Springs International Film Festival, which typically happens in January (but was canceled in 2021).

How much does it cost to rent a vacation house in Palm Springs?

Costs for vacation home rentals in the Palm Springs area range enormously, with the price depending on factors like home size, amenities, and seasonality.

For a ballpark range, consider nightly Airbnb rental prices in the range of about $200 to $400 for two to three bedrooms with a private pool. The higher end of that range might include professionally designed interiors, a nicer pool and views, and a posher feel. Don't forget that taxes and fees add substantially to the final cost. Longer month-long stays, however, often will earn discounts, and will widen availability as many surrounding desert towns have limitations on short term rentals.

What should I look for in an Airbnb?

First, you should seek to find an Airbnb that suits your party's size, ages, and budget. Beyond that, consider data points such as the ones we weigh here when compiling our recommendations for readers.

These criteria include positive recent reviews, Superhost status, amenities, and participation in the Enhanced Clean program, rolled out for safety and reassurance in the pandemic era.

How do I book a home in Palm Springs on Airbnb?

Filter your home search based on price, dates of your stay, the number of bedrooms you need, amenities, pet-friendliness, and other specifics.

Note that your search may pull up homes outside of Palm Springs proper (such as Rancho Mirage and Cathedral City), though this may make little difference to visitors. When you find a listing you like, check its cancellation policies and the final price including fees. For more info on the process of booking an Airbnb, click here.

What is Airbnb's cancellation policy?

Airbnb's individual hosts determine their own cancellation policies, which vary from listing to listing. For a detailed summary Airbnb's cancellation policies, click here.

Is it safe to stay in an Airbnb?

According to the CDC, fully vaccinated people can now safely travel in the US.

Additionally, medical professionals agree that private Airbnbs are safe amid the ongoing pandemic, given the reduced exposure to other guests and staff compared to hotels, with little need for concern about virus transmission through surfaces.

Airbnb hosts are also required to follow enhanced cleaning procedures. Of course, be sure to follow CDC guidelines, practice social distancing, wear a mask, and wash your hands frequently.
