USB Typewriter Computer Keyboard

Just in case you think the above image is a joke, you would be very wrong. It actually works and is available to buy now. It also works for PCs and Macs.

"This antique typewriter has been modified to work as a USB Keyboard for PC, Mac, or even iPad! That's right -- its a beautiful and fully functional computer keyboard!

The USB Typewriter can type all letters, numerals, and punctuation marks. It also includes shift, space, and return carriage (which is literally activated by the typewriter's return carriage!). Many non-standard keys, such as F1-F12, esc, ctrl, and so on are available with a special toggle key.

Twitter tracking

I have tended to think of Twitter as safer than the other social networks, but this article from Dustin Curtis highlights some of the tracking that does on when using the service. I can’t say I am surprised or particularly worried, but it is good to know what’s happening behind the screen.

“Basically, every time you visit a site that has a follow button, a “tweet this” button, or a hovercard, Twitter is recording your behavior. It is transparently watching your movements and storing them somewhere for later use. Right now, that data will make better suggestions for accounts you might want to follow. But what other things can it be used for? The privacy implications of such behavior by a company so large are sweeping and absolute.”

The compact camera is dying very quickly

The latest smartphones from HTC and Samsung, and to a lesser degree the iPhone 4S, show just how far smartphone cameras have come in a short space of time. The quality of output is now so good that you would be hard pressed to know if the photos have been taken with a smartphone or a compact camera, and this is just one problem facing compact cameras.

The fact that they find it difficult to connect easily to desktops and laptops is another. They cannot easily share with social networks and they are not very portable. And the list goes on and on.

Now that smartphone cameras offer results that are comparable to compacts, the final nail in the coffin may not be too far away. Auntie Joyce will always use a compact camera, but when she dies she will leave generations of people who have been brought up on smartphone cameras. Sorry to say, but phone cameras and DSLRs (and above) are the only picture-takers I can see with a long term future.

Your home screen for £50

It has been a long time since we held a competition on Lost In Mobile so I have come up with a very simple one with a simple prize.

You need to send a screenshot of your current home screen to shaun (at) mailstm.co.uk and the most original or best looking example will win £50. No promo codes or offers- just £50 sent to you to do what you like with.

I realise that this is more difficult for iPhone owners so will also accept home screens from desktops, laptops and tablets as well.

Closing date is 25th May 2012. Good luck.

COTD: Fragmentation

I tend to agree with Joel on the Android fragmentation comment below-

"I still don't get the fragmentation FUD campaign.. Even OS fragmentation is NOT a user issue if the same apps happily work across the last 3 major releases (99% of devices). Honestly I am crazy about buying apps these days and have 2.x, 3.x and 4.x Android devices and 95% of the apps work across all devices.. The ones that don't are generally the tablet specific ones and they generally have a version for each (tablet or phone) like Evernote.."
